In my 30 odd years of life I have yet to find some true meaning, some purpose and direction. I come from a religious background but am now steadfastly atheist. I was open to many beliefs and systems in my earlier years but am now quite skeptical of all the proposed answers to our existence. For all that, I am still searching. I’m increasingly skeptical that I will find any ultimate answers in my life but I do hope that I can help frame the questions better and possibly ask a few more. I also have a (albeit small) hope that I can help my community and society improve the understanding of our place in this universe and hopefully motivate it to increase it’s efforts to further finding the meaning that I am missing. While I have small hope of finding answers I do hope that some generation in the future can finally see the big picture.
I have defined three goals for myself. These are to:
1. make a reasonable effort to find ‘ultimate’ answers or to understand why the answers elude us.
2. make a contribution to my community and society that moves forward the boundaries of human understanding towards those same answers.
3. make a reasonable effort to communicate my findings to others.
I recognise two unanswered questions that I hope will help lead us to our ‘ultimate’ answers.
These are:
1. What are we? This is currently being studied by science in the areas covered by cognitive science, namely Neuroscience, Psychology, Human biology, Linguistics and Philosophy.
2. Where are we? This is currently being studied by science in the areas of Physics and Astronomy.
While both areas are of significant importance to my goals I am of the opinion that before we can know our place we really need to know ourselves. As has been found in the recent scientific past, our minds interfere with our measurements and understanding of what we study. It is critical to the scientific community to properly understand the instruments of perception before using those instruments for further study. Of course we are in a bit of a bind here because we have to use the instruments to study the instruments but I believe best effort much be taken before expending significant effort looking outward. As such the purpose of my study, life and this blog are directed to the study of ‘what are we?’.
