The evangelical christians on campus have done me a favour this week and all started to wear blue t-shirts. Now I know who they are and how to avoid them :) The blue t-shirts are a symbol of their ‘Jesus Much’ (see http://jesusmuch.org ) week they are excitedly celebrating on campus. I am surprised by how many are wearing these shirts.
I have been attending a few of their talks to see things from the perspective that 20 intervening years has given me on the christian fundamentalism of my youth. What’s clear that we both have changed and there is a large gulf between the my current life view and my old evangelical awareness. I’m about to sit in on a discussion on ‘The New Atheism’. I’m expecting this largely to be an (straw man) attack on Richard Dawkins. Though many of his arguments are good he has said quite a bit that is reasonably and easily undermined.
One thing that does bother me is that these christians lack any intellectual integrity. Many discussions are framed with intellectual analysis but the arguments are so flimsy it’s almost embarrasing to see. I find it hard to understand how these people hold on to these arguments. The lack of intellectual honesty must surely undermine the studies they do on campus, especially the christians that share my biological science classes.
